Water Drinking: How do I Up My Daily Water Consumption?

Drink more water, drink more water, drink more water. We hear it all the time. Blah, blah, blah, we all know we need to drink more water.

It seems whichever way you look, there’s a different recommendation for just exactly how much water we’re supposed to drink. The requirement that everyone seems to know is eight 8-ounce glasses a day. Then there’s the half-your-weight in-ounces suggestion, as well as the 2-3 liters a day suggestion.

Truthfully, the amount of water you should drink each day depends on many personal factors, like your health, activity level, and where you live.

The Institute of Medicine recommends 3 liters (13 cups) of beverages a day for men, and 2.2 liters (9 cups) a day for women.

How can I up my water drinking?

So you know you need to be drinking more water. But maybe you’re one of those people who “doesn’t like the taste of water,” (whatever that means) or maybe you drink water, but just never hit that intake goal. There are a couple ways you can jazz up your water and boost your daily water intake, including…

Try Sparkling.

If you’re trying to kick the soda habit and pick up the water habit, switching to sparkling water can be a good place to start. You still get the 0 calories, 0 sugar bonus of regular tap water, but it’s a little more…exciting.

Switch it up with flavor packets.

Flavor packets can be a good way to get some extra UMPH in your water, but you’ll have to be mindful of any added sweeteners included. If you just plain do not like the taste of water, this might be a good place to start.

Use a filter.

Sometimes water from a tap has a tendency to taste chemically sometimes, so if you don’t like the way tap water tastes, consider buying a pitcher filter. Filters are also an option for those who are concerned about contamination or what’s in the tap water.

Infuse with fruit.

fruit-infused-waterAn easy way to get a sweet fix is by making fruit-infused water. This allows you to satisfy that sweet tooth without downing a couple sodas. Infused water will add a subtle sweetness to your water, but make no mistake — it won’t compare to drinking say, a Sprite. Creating infused water can be as easy as just dumping fruit in a glass and letting it soak, but there’s also fancy infusion pitchers and infusion water bottles.

Perhaps the biggest perk of drinking water for many is that it helps control weight. Those who drink solely water instead of juices and sodas are naturally going to be healthier.

Also, our bodies are about 60% water. Drinking enough water each day helps aid us in digestion, absorption, circulation, transportation of nutrients, and body temperature regulation. Water helps energize our muscles, and keeps our skin and hair looking good.
