Don’t think that just because you don’t have an oven at your disposal that there’s no options for food besides the truck stop McDonald’s! This portable stove plugs into the cigarette lighter and warms food up to 300 degrees, making it a perfect way to heat things like stews, beans, soups, sandwiches, and more in about an hour. Just plug it in, throw the food you need to heat in the portable stove, and drive. When you stop, you have a warm meal waiting for you with very little effort.
As a trucker, you’re bound to experience many different temperatures all in one day. This makes a travel electric blanket a good option for the road. Keep comfy on a long trip by plugging this electric blanket into the 12-volt power outlet in your truck. This 58″ x 42″ blanket is made from soft fleece and features a safety shut-off timer with a 7 foot long power cord.
3. Slow Cooker
We’re pretty adamant about slow cookers here at The Healthy Trucker. They’re a great way to eat healthy on the road with minimal preparation and work. Just chuck everything into the pot, turn it on, and drive for the day. When you stop, dinner’s ready, easy as pie! This slow cooker from RoadPro plugs directly into the cigarette lighter and features a glass lid with a stretch cord to keep it secure while you’re driving.
While a GPS can be a handy device for the road, it’s important that truckers know how to navigate the highways the traditional way — with an atlas. This atlas is made by the one and only Rand McNally and is laminated so it won’t get beat up in your truck cab. It features detailed coverage of state truck routes. There’s not much more to say — it’s an atlas, and probably the best trucker’s atlas out there.
A Bluetooth headset is a helpful item for staying in touch with friends and family on the road. As truckers know, it’s illegal to use a handheld cellphone while on duty. A Bluetooth headset makes it easy and legal to talk to people back home with just the push of a button. Get our review on Bluetooth headsets.
6. Work Gloves
For flatbedders especially, a solid set of work gloves can be a lifesaver on the road. These CAT work gloves have a split leather palm, an elastic wrist, and come in multiple sizes. Better yet, they’re very affordable.
7. Truck GPS
After investing in a high-quality trucker atlas, the next step some drivers want to take is purchasing a truck-specific GPS. And while it’s crucial to know how to get from Point A to Point B with a basic atlas, there’s no doubt that a truck GPS provides an extra little layer of security on the road. There are several truck GPS manufacturers out there, just ensure you’re purchasing a unit made specifically for truck drivers, or else you could find yourself stranded on some roads you’re not legally supposed to be on.
We all know life on the road tends to be a little…unhealthy, but with a little effort, it doesn’t have to be that way. One of our biggest recommendations (and a great buy) for truckers is a compact cooler. These can plug into the cigarette lighter to keep healthy foods chilled on the road so you don’t have to stop at Burger King and McDonald’s all the time. Mini fridges/coolers vary in price, but this Koolatron cooler is a good starting fridge.
